Cannot pair Ikea Vindstyrka with Conbee II

Hi! I have a conbee II I use been using for about a year with Domoticz & Deconz. I managed to add a few Xioami (spelling probably wrong!) sensors to it OK, and they’ve been reading temps etc. just fine. I bought a Ikea Vindstyrka as it was reported to work with Zigbee/Conbee but I am unable to pair it.

I have the latest version of the Conbee firmware (though that seems to be from 2022), and the v2.29 of DeConz. I open the Phoscon app, click on the gateway, go to sensors, and click Connect new sensor. The ‘attempting to connect’ window opens, and I click the pair button in the device, and the link icon on the LCD starts flashing, but that is as far as I get. The pair always times out. If I recall, it took a few goes on my existing sensors, but I have been trying for hours here and nothing. I have tried putting the device next to the conbee II, unplugging the device and conbee, and retrying etc., many times.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I think a popular device, so hopefully, someone has it working (I have seen many people in the forums report it working). I am running on Windows 2012, btw.

Thank you for any suggestions.

OK, I finally figured out how to get this working. Had tried pairing dozens of times! I hope this helps someone else.

The device was brand new and never before used, but I found out there is a factory reset function. Press the ikea air sensor quality pair button quickly 4 times. It reset, and instantly paired! The sensor shows correctly.

I do hope this simple fix helps save someone else hours! Cheers.

I am have zero success getting mine to pair. I’ve tried the four-press reset (and that does flash the screen like it’s rebooting) but it’s not getting picked up in phoson. I’ve done the 4-button cycle at least a dozen times.

I’ve got deconz 2.29.0 installed on Windows with a Conbee II (that has other working devices already connected to it)

I think the Conbee II firmware is 0x26780700? At least that’s what is reported in the About box of windows deCONZ. I believe that’s the most current for the Conbee 2?

The literature that came with the unit says to press the pairing button for 3 seconds. This doesn’t really seem to do anything. When I do the 4-press action, after it resets the pairing icon starts flashing. The phoscon web app does not see the sensor. If I hold the pairing button the icon on the screen of the unit does not change; it keeps flashing. Randomly, the pairing icon will sometimes stop flashing and go solid. Yet nothing shows up in phoson/deconz. I do not have any other zigbee/ikea hubs or anything else.

I’ve tried phoscon via desktop chrome and the android app. Same outcome, no pairing.

Correct me if I’m wrong here, shouldn’t the device be able to pair directly with the Conbee 2? It doesn’t require the Ikea hub as an intermediary, correct?

I had the Conbee already in pairing mode ( as I had many times prior), pressed the button 4 times to get the unit to reset, and it went straight into pairing mode and paired in seconds. I did not need to put it into pairing mode via the button. I honestly had tried for hours over a couple weeks prior with no luck! Probably dozens of times. I’m running deconz 2.29 on Windows. The latest (though that is fairly old) Conbee II firmware.

ok, that confirms that it’ll connect directly to the conbee (a model II, right?) with 2.29 on Windows… so my setup should work. Check the about box in the windows dcCONZ window, it’ll show the firmware on your conbee stick. I can’t imagine an older firmware would be ‘better’ at letting something like this pair… but you never know.

I’ve tried moving it to other places in the house, no change in pairing.

Yes - A conbee II. The firmware is 0x26780700. I did see that support was added to deConz etc. long ago, which is why I was confused I could not initially add it.

It appears there’s more wrong with my network than I understood. While the deconz graphics screen shows my devices and seems to be engaging with them, I can’t seem to actually control anything?

I don’t have much on zigbee, just some sensors and I assumed they were reporting in ok. It now appears maybe not?

All I was trying to do was add one sensor and now it looks like there’s more wrong than I expected. I hate software sometimes…

SOLVED: network masking? Don’t recall making any changes to the config, but checking the Edit->Network Settings showed the Channel Mask with only 20 checked. Checking the others brought my network back to life.

I looked into the Debug view, under INFO_L2 and noticed a number of 0xE1 messages. Interesting. Mine was set to channel 15 only, but I recall doing a search on this and reading they only select and use 1 channel, but you might need to unpair and re-pair devices if the channel is changed. Perhaps that happened to you.

Deconz Network Masking

The Deconz Network Mask refers to a setting in the Deconz software that allows you to configure the ZigBee channel(s) used by your ZigBee network. This setting is crucial for ensuring reliable communication between devices in your network.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Single Channel Operation: A ZigBee network operates on a single channel at a time. When the ConBee (a USB stick used as a ZigBee coordinator) forms the network, it selects a single channel.
  2. Channel Mask: The Channel Mask setting allows you to specify which channels to enable or disable. This is useful when there are interference issues with neighboring networks or devices.
  3. Recommended Channels: It’s recommended to enable channels 11, 15, 20, and 25 for optimal performance.
  4. Persistence: The Channel Mask setting may not persist across restarts of the Deconz software. To ensure the setting takes effect, save the changes, press Done, and then Leave and Join the network.
  5. Backup and Version Issues: Regular backups of Deconz using Phoscon can help prevent data loss and version-related issues. Version 2.05.51 of Deconz was problematic and has been replaced by 2.05.52.
